Upcycling
Project reflection-
What is climate change and how is it different from global warming?
Climate change is often used as a synonym of global warming but global warming is actually a part of climate change. Global warming is the warming of the earth but climate change is warm, cold, or even dry weather. Climate change is how the weather is changing long-term. Climate change is a natural occurrence but global warming is caused by the amount of pollution in the atmosphere. Why should we care about climate change, now, when it's been happening naturally since the Earth began? Climate change is a natural occurrence but this time it very different. Humans have sped up the process of climate change making the weather change more drastically and more frequently. If climate change keeps going at the rate it is currently everything that can’t adapt to the weather will die. We need to care about it because if we don’t start now we will all be wiped out eventually. Although climate change is natural the rate it’s changing is alarming. How does your project demonstrate your understanding of climate change? My project was about upcycling and the benefits it could have on the environment. Textile waste is a major problem because there is more than 15 million tons of textile waste in the US each year and about 10.46 million tons of that ends up in land fills. The fashion industry is accountable for 10% of the annual global carbon emission and carbon is one of the main reasons climate change is speeding up. Upcycling is a great way to recycle clothing instead of throwing it away and also its fun to make something different than what it originally was. What was your largest area of growth during this project? My area of growth is to be able to explain climate change better. I think I have a really good understanding of climate change but there was multiple times I was asked ‘what is climate change’ and I couldn’t think of a way to explain it. During exhibition Mia ended up telling me to let her talk about climate change and I could talk about our project. I need to improve my communication skills especially when I am talking about climate change. What was your greatest strength during this project? I think my biggest strength was my ability to persevere through out this project. When we first started this project I had my own idea with recycling soda tabs and Mia was upcycling clothes so we decided to be partners. We hand made the mannequins with duck tape and stuffing and put them on a broom stick pole. Then, we had to make a stable way for the mannequins to stand up. Mia was sick and gone two weeks while I had to measure, cut, remeasure, recut, screw and, wrap up the mannequins. Honestly it doesn’t seem like that hard of a task but it was actually really and doing it pretty much by my self, with the help of Mady, made it really stressful. Also, I barely got any of my soda jewelry done. It felt like every idea I had was most of the time overlooked or overruled so I’m proud I was able to persevere through it and have a presentable product. |
