Project description: In this project we were assigned a country that is a part of the United Nations and then we debated on our countries perspective of the Venezuelan refugee crisis. We all made policy papers and resolutions but only 3 resolutions were picked for the conference. In the conference, we all made speeches about our perspective and action plan for the refugee crisis. Then we voted on the amendments that were submitted by other countries and the resolutions. As Peru, I supported resolution 2b, written by Pakistan.

ReflectionHighlights: The best part about this project was learning about my country and about my allies and learning how the UN works and what the conferences look like. Because I am Peru, my perspective is to help the Venezuelans coming into my country. It was interesting to see what the other countries’ action plans were. Also, the conference was very professional and made me feel that I was surrounded by mature young adults for once.
Growth: This project I have learned a lot about the current state Venezuela is in and the realness of the refugee crisis. Refugees die daily trying to escape Venezuela due to poverty, shortage of food, lack of health care, and violence. I also learned about the current president, Nicolás Maduro, who is blamed by allies of the U.S for causing the crisis and the self-proclaimed interim president, Juan Guaidó, who allies of China do not support.

Conference Preparation:
The first day we did the conference I felt very unprepared. I usually have a feeling that I did something incorrectly and that I will embarrass myself. I don’t particularly like speaking in front of the entire class making it hard for me to comment on other speeches. The second day I felt more prepared, I already listened to half of the class speeches and I felt confident in the few changes I made to my speech. After my speech, we voted on amendments and I had to give a brief statement on my amendment that I was not prepared for. My statement was sloppy and not thought out and it could have been a much better description if I had known about it prior. But my amendment still passed unanimously.
Refinement:
For the next conference, I need to work on my confidence when speaking in front of people. I feel that I had a really good speech but as I was saying it my voice got shaky and I started to stutter. Also, I didn’t comment on any speeches because I felt what I wanted to say wasn’t as relevant as what other people were saying. I understand that its a requirement to be active during the conference but I feel scared to say what I’m thinking.
